Cellist, Composer, & Conductor Sean Kim has garnered prizes in prestigious string and composition competitions while maintaining a rigorous performing schedule

As a Cellist, he has performed as a soloist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at  the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra, the Landon Symphonette Orchestra, and the Maryland Columbia Orchestra upon winning the annual Concerto Competitions.  Sean won first place in the International Concerto Competition at the American Fine Arts Festival in New York City, American Protégé International Concerto Competition, Columbia Orchestra Young Artist Competition, Howard County High School Gifted and Talented Orchestra Concerto Competition, the Landon Symphonette Orchestra Concerto Competition, and the Maryland State Music Teachers Association String Competition.

He was also the state alternate winner of the Music Teacher National Association Competition and the Frederick Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition.  Moreover, he was also a finalist in the University of Maryland Concerto Competition as well as a prize winner in the U.S. Army Orchestra Concerto Competition, Joseph & Goldie Feder Memorial String Competition, Montgomery Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, Young Artist Orchestra Concerto Competition, and the Young Musicians Inspiring Change Competition.  Additionally, he also performed at the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall in New York City.

Sean has made his orchestral debut as a soloist at the age of thirteen with the Maryland Columbia Orchestra.  He was also the principal cellist for the Burleigh Manor Middle School Chamber Orchestra in Ellicott city, Maryland where he performed as a soloist with its chamber ensemble.  In addition, Sean has served as the principal cellist in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Side by Side concert and was a cellist in the Peabody Youth Orchestra and the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra.

As a composer, Sean has won 1st place in the University of Maryland #RemixTerps Competition for his 12 Cello arrangement of the UMD Fight Song as well as 2nd place in the Great Composers Competition Rising Talents of Americas for his composition, Theme & Variation for Solo Cello.  His music has been played by various ensembles such as the American Brass Quintet from the Juilliard School of Music, the Terps Cello Ensemble, the New Music Lab Orchestra, the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra, and a reduced Juilliard Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to composition, Sean is also a conductor and music producer.  He formed the Terps Cello Ensemble consisting of cellists from the University of Maryland School of Music and rehearsed, recorded, and promoted his 12 Cello arrangement of the UMD Fight Song across social media.  Additionally, he conducted his flute concertini with the New Music Lab Orchestra as well as his orchestra piece, New Adventures, with the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra.

Sean holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition and a Bachelor of Arts in Cello Performance from the University of Maryland School of Music, where he was awarded a full merit scholarship. He also studied cello performance at the Peabody Preparatory of Johns Hopkins University, as well as composition and orchestration at the Juilliard School of Music via the Extension Program.

Sean currently teaches mathematics and strings at a private school in New York City, while maintaining a private music studio. He also tutors students for standardized examinations, including the SAT, SHSAT, and the Dental Admission Test (DAT), on which he scored in the 99th percentile.

Previously, Sean was pursuing a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. Drawing on his interdisciplinary background in music, mathematics, dentistry, and education, he also advises students pursuing admission to Ivy League universities and dental schools.
